Malignant Tumour: Burninhell

13/11/13  ||  Habakuk

This crazy bunch of Czechs that play their gigs in shitty costumes actually have something to offer behind the joke facade. Nesting themselves neatly in the no mans land between metal and crust punk and with a bit of a grind attitude to go with it, the music is actually seriously good. The only lightheartedness comes in the form of an unscrupulous way of borrowing freely from more well-known sources, as can be seen in the homage / blatant rip-off (both can be argued for) of Motörhead (“Obsessed by Hell”) and Tankard (“Oseriöst som faan”). I tend to see it as the former and happily forgive them.

What makes that easy for me is that the constant d-beat barrage is both well-executed and well-produced – to the point where any more professionalism could be interpreted as overdone and streamlined. In terms of production, the band are taking the genre as far as one should, but manage to hit the spot perfectly.

Thus lacking the filth and much of the fuzz of many full-on Discharge follow-ups and replacing it with a full, thick sound, they can serve as an introduction to crust for more metal-oriented listeners, as well as a special treat for those who like me, are of the opinion that metal and crust are two things which would do no harm being combined more often. As opposed to Whiskey and beer, even though the band want to convince you of that with some fervor.
